CinTurs Researcher Selected by the Economic Research Forum as a Research Fellow

Fatemeh Bagheri, Integrated Researcher at CinTurs, has been appointed Research Fellow of the Economic Research Forum (ERF), an independent research network founded in 1993 and focused on sustainable and inclusive development in the MENA region. Her appointment followed a review by the ERF Advisory Committee and approval by its Board of Trustees. As a Research Fellow, she will join the ERF research community and have access to its publications and engagement activities with international organisations and development practitioners. The fellowship also creates scope for links between CinTurs' research and wider work on regional and sustainable development.

CinTurs Hosts Visiting Researcher Dr Aiheng (Carrie) Zhang

Dr. Aiheng (Carrie) Zhang, from the School of Business at Guangdong University of Foreign Studies (China), joins CinTurs as a Visiting Researcher from 15th September 2026 to 14th September 2027. During her stay, she will study the mobility trajectories and cultural reproduction of transnational intermarriage families in Europe. Her work will be supervised by Professor Scott A. Cohen, Integrated Researcher at CinTurs and Professor at the Faculty of Economics, University of Algarve. The visit adds to the centre's international research partnerships and may lead to further collaboration with Chinese institutions.

Doctor Honoris Causa for Vítor Neto on World Tourism Day

The University of Algarve conferred the degree of Doctor Honoris Causa on Vítor Neto, in recognition of his contribution to the development and international projection of tourism in Portugal, particularly in the Algarve. The ceremony took place on 25 September, on World Tourism Day, at the Caixa Geral de Depósitos Grand Auditorium, Gambelas Campus. The proposal came from the Faculty of Economics and was approved unanimously by the Academic Senate. The distinction also recognises his role at the University, including as President of the General Council between 2017 and 2021, and his work in bringing together academia, the tourism sector and the regional economy. The candidacy was presented by Professor João Albino Silva, Integrated Researcher at CinTurs, who acted as sponsor, CinTurs congratulates Vítor Neto on this honour.

CinTurs Becomes a New European Bauhaus Partner

CinTurs has joined the New European Bauhaus (NEB) as a partner. The initiative, launched by the European Commission, brings together sustainability, aesthetics and inclusion in thinking about how places and living environments can be designed and transformed. The NEB community includes universities and research centres, public authorities, businesses, cultural organisations, designers and civil society. CinTurs will take part in this network in areas related to its research on sustainability, well-being and innovation.

CinTurs Seminar: “Rethinking ESG: The Role of ESG Controversies and Long-Term Returns in Corporate Dividend Policy”

CinTurs is organising the seminar "Rethinking ESG: The Role of ESG Controversies and Long-Term Returns in Corporate Dividend Policy". It will take place on Friday, 16th October 2026, at 14h30, in Room 3A, Faculty of Economics, Gambelas Campus. The seminar will be presented by Professor Aleksandra Pieloch-Babiarz, whose expertise covers corporate finance, dividend policy, capital markets and corporate sustainability, and Professor Agnieszka Matuszewska-Pierzynka, whose earlier work addressed the ownership transformation of state-owned enterprises and who now focuses on corporate sustainability and sustainable business strategies. The session will be conducted in English. Attendance is free, but registration is required here .

CinTurs Researchers at the European Researchers' Night

On 25th September, the Centro Ciência Viva do Algarve, in Faro, hosted European Researchers' Night with the activity "ResearchArt - Who is behind the science? A work. A person. A hypothesis."
The initiative was developed around Micro-Folie, in collaboration with the Alliance Française. Participants interacted with researchers, followed a series of clues and discovered the work each researcher had chosen. The activity looked at the connection between science, art and the people behind research. Five researchers from the University of Algarve took part, including CinTurs Integrated Researchers Sílvia Fernandes and Jorge Ramos.

New Issue of the Journal of Tourism, Sustainability and Well-Being

CinTurs is pleased to announce the publication of Volume 14, No. 3 (2026) of the Journal of Tourism, Sustainability and Well-Being. This issue brings together four contributions examining how technological transformation, environmental pressures and community engagement are reshaping tourism development and well-being, from the growing role of emerging technologies in smart tourism events and the transition towards Industry 5.0 in hospitality, to the influence of environmental crises on tourist behaviour and destination resilience and the barriers limiting local participation in tourism-related leisure activities. Together, these studies reinforce the value of integrated approaches to tourism development that connect digital innovation, environmental resilience, inclusive participation and human well-being, reflecting CinTurs' ongoing commitment to advancing high-quality, internationally relevant research in the field.
